Music & Me
Hey, everyone! My name is Jacobi Cherry, and I am a sophomore from Williamsburg, Virginia. I play basketball for Converse, and though I would not refer to myself as a classically trained musician, I do make music with my friends from home who work in music production. My friends and I are finishing our first full-length single, and we have numerous projects planned for the future. Concerning my experience with instruments, I played the ukulele last semester for a course named Music, Your Brain, and Wellness. I love all genres of music, and I especially enjoy music that tests the boundaries of genres and does not particularly fit into one singular genre. Because I listen to so much music daily, I also listen to many artists, and I cannot say I have one favorite artist. My Spotify Wrapped usually features hip-hop artists like Tyler, the Creator, Kanye West, and Drake, with many other types of artists sprinkled throughout.
One of Them Ones
- Tyler, the Creator - GONE, GONE/THANK YOU (feat. CeeLo Green, Cullen Omori & La Roux)
- Tyler, the Creator’s 2019 album, IGOR, is filled with some of my favorite songs in his discography. This song, in particular, is arguably one of my favorite of all time. I love it when artists make songs that have multiple parts, and both segments of this one flow effortlessly into one another to continue the story Tyler, the Creator, is articulating throughout the entire album. I think the song's beat is fun and upbeat, which clashes with the melancholic material of the lyrics. In the first segment of this track, Tyler speaks of losing love for his partner, and in the second, he thanks his partner for the love they gave him. This song seems bubbly and cheery to those who don't pay lyrics much attention, but to those who love to read between the lines, this is sure to pull a few heartstrings.
My Current Music Go-To
- Travis Scott - TIL FURTHER NOTICE (feat. James Blake & 21 Savage)
- The outro of Travis Scott’s latest album, UTOPIA, holds a special place in my rotation. Finishing out one of his most experimental albums to date, Travis Scott recruits features from singer James Blake and rapper 21 Savage, along with production from Metro Boomin, finishes out his newest album with a beat and flow that has a sense of urgency, vocals that uplift and intoxicate, and an overall product that perfectly closes out the album. I love music that tests the boundaries of specific genres, and Travis Scott’s production and stylistic choices for this album do just that. I love seeing the influence of artists like Kanye West peek through each song on the album, and I have had the album on repeat since its release.
Music That Means Something to Me
- JAY-Z, Kanye West - Gotta Have It
- I specifically remember this song as my dad and I’s morning anthem on my way to school. Though he did not take me to school a lot growing up, I will remember this as the song that would wake me up in the early mornings. This song will always have a special place in my music rotation, especially as me and my dad have gotten closer recently.
Musical Disconnect
- I have never been able to connect with Taylor Swift’s music. I was always surrounded by her music, growing up in a predominantly White city, but I could never get behind it.
I thought your blog was very interesting and I enjoyed hearing different backgrounds of your music choices. I kind of agree with you on Taylor Swifts music, but I do like some of her songs. I feel like from what I read you have a very specific music taste, which I do as well. I also think it is very interesting. and cool you make your own music.
ReplyDeleteI really like what you had to say! I agree that I love artists that cross genre boundaries, that's one of the reasons I also like Tyler the Creator. Despite me not personally liking Jay-Z and Kanye West it was fun to read about why you appreciate their music and your memories associated with it. I also did not know you made music, which was super cool to learn!
ReplyDeleteHey Jacobi, I really liked your blog. I also love the album IGOR by Tylor the Creator; it's always been my favorite of his entire discography. I liked how you described the songs you picked and why you liked them.
ReplyDeleteHi Jacobi, `I really like your selection of music choices. Especially Jay-z and Kanye west gotta have it song that was one of my favorite songs growing up.
ReplyDeleteHey Jacobi, I really appreciated this post because of your comment about Taylor Swift, I couldn't agree more. I think she is somewhat of a very overhyped artist, and her music is overplayed and can get annoying. Not to mention the fanbase is a direct relflection of that. If you really wanna listen to a great female artist, picks like Fleetwood Mac and Heart are so much better.
ReplyDeleteHello Jacobi, I agree that that Tyler The Creator song is amazing because it doesn't use a very traditional song structure. I also think that taking time to actually interpret the lyrics adds a lot of dimension to music as many people overlook them and just enjoy the instrumentation and melodies. I always like to hear how special music is to people's lives and your story about Gotta Have It is really emotional.
